📘 1. What is History?

History is the study of past events.

It helps us understand how people lived, what they did, and how society changed over time.


🗓️ 2. What is a Timeline?

A timeline is a line that shows events in the order they happened.

It helps us understand when events took place and how they are related.


🏺 3. Importance of Timelines

Helps to arrange events in sequence (chronological order).

Makes it easier to remember and compare events.


🕰️ 4. Measuring Time in History

BC (Before Christ): Years before the birth of Jesus Christ. (Counts backward)

AD (Anno Domini): Latin for “In the year of our Lord” – years after Jesus was born.

CE (Common Era): Same as AD, but non-religious.

BCE (Before Common Era): Same as BC, but non-religious.


🧭 5. Eras in Indian History

Prehistoric Period: Before writing was invented.

Historic Period: When written records were available.


🧱 6. Major Periods of Indian History

1. Ancient History – Early human life to around 700 CE.

(Example: Harappan Civilization, Maurya Empire)

2. Medieval History – 700 CE to 1700 CE.

(Example: Delhi Sultanate, Mughal Empire)

3. Modern History – 1700 CE to present.

(Example: British Rule, Freedom Struggle, Independent India)


🛕 7. Sources of History

Archaeological Sources: Buildings, coins, tools, pottery, etc.

Literary Sources: Books, inscriptions, manuscripts, etc.
